Greg O'Neil - Head Tennis Professional

Greg O'Neil joined Ivanhoe Club in the spring of 2018. Greg developed his love for tennis while growing up in the western suburbs of Chicago. Most of his weekends were spent competing in local, sectional and national junior tournaments. By his senior year of high school he was ranked one of the top 20 junior players in the Midwest. After accepting a scholarship at Northern Illinois University where he played #1 singles and #1 doubles, Greg spent two years on the pro circuit where he earned a world tennis ranking.

Greg focused on the next phase of his tennis profession once his competitive playing days were completed. He learned and honed his on court teaching skills and off court management/leadership skills under the tutelage of two well respected and accomplished tennis coaches at Lake Shore Athletic Club. Greg’s body of work is very broad, it includes everything from teaching casual and competitive junior and adult club level players to working with world class players, NCAA champions and High School State Champions.

Using more of a cooperative coaching style, Greg is able to share in the learning process with his students thus making it a team effort. Through the communication of simple concepts and strong visual demonstrations, he helps each player understand the game of tennis rather than blindly following a given number of pre-set rules. Greg believes that problem solving, decision-making and tactical thinking are a priority in tennis and are skills he will continue to promote to his students.
